Mayor de Blasio hands out flyers promoting the paid sick leave guidelines for New York City employees in July 2014. The legislation has seen nearly 10,000 workers get restitution over two years.
Two years after the city expanded paid sick leave to cover more New Yorkers, the legislation has led to $ 1.7 million in fines and restitution for nearly 10,000 workers.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has closed about 700 cases for workers who weren’t getting their sick time, officials said.
Under the law, businesses with five or more workers must give five days of paid sick time a year.
Critics said it would hurt businesses, but wages in industries like retail and food services have grown or remained the same, officials said.
