McCarthy’s comments have given Clinton the first opportunity in months to go on offense against the Benghazi Committee.
WASHINGTON — Clinton is going on offense on Benghazi.
Clinton’s campaign has a new ad out highlighting House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s recent comments that the committee’s work has dragged down her poll numbers, the latest in an escalating verbal assault aimed at using his gaffe to discredit all investigations into her use of a private email server.
“The Republicans have spent millions attacking Hillary because she’s fighting for everything they oppose,” the ad’s narrator says after playing a clip of McCarthy’s comments.

Hillary Clinton has gone on the offense in her new ad campaign.
“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee. What are her numbers today?” McCarthy said on Fox News last week, a gift that Clinton’s campaign hopes will keep on giving to discredit attacks against her.
Clinton highlighted McCarthy’s comments in Monday’s campaign events and is expected to do so Tuesday as well. McCarthy’s tin-eared comments give Clinton the first opportunity in months to go on offense against the Benghazi Committee, perfect timing for her two weeks ahead her day-long testimony in front of the committee scheduled for late October.
“This committee was set up, as they have admitted, for the purpose of making a partisan political issue out of the deaths of four Americans,” Clinton said at a New Hampshire round-table on Monday. “I would have never done that, and if I were president and there were Republicans or Democrats who were thinking about that, I would have done everything to shut it down.”
