JUBA (9 Nov.) — On Monday, Dr. Anne Itto, deputy secretary general for SPLM’s Southern Sector, continued her efforts to drive turnout for voter registration in the South. She participated in a women’s procession in Juba that culminated in a rally at the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA). Organized by Joy Kwaje, chairperson for the South Sudan Human Rights Commission, the event sought to mobilize women to register to vote under the message of “Register for the Future of Your Children.“ “Women fought hard to end discrimination and marginalization. Now it is the time to contribute to building democracy in our country by registering to vote,” said Dr. Anne in her remarks to the participants. “This registration process is not only important for the upcoming general election to be held next year, but will be critical to the referendum that will determine the destiny of your children and grandchildren.” Dr. Anne has traveled to several states to mobilize people to register to vote. Her most recent trip included visits to Yambio and Wau, where she met with women’s groups, church leaders and chiefs, as well as representatives from the State High Committees. In both places, Cde. Dr. Anne appealed to all citizens to turnout and register to vote. “I call on every citizen to participate in this historic election by registering to vote,” said Dr. Anne after visiting a registration center in Wau. “You will not be able to vote in next year’s election if you do not register. The time is short and all of us must make it a priority in the coming days to get to a voter registration.” |
